Amsterdam Rave Guide: Techno Clubs, Festivals & What to Wear

The Amsterdam rave guide: the best techno clubs, festivals like ADE...

Amsterdam rave in one paragraph: Amsterdam is one of Europe's techno capitals. Raves happen every weekend in converted warehouses, a prison boiler room and a club under a tower in Noord, and the city peaks every October during Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). This guide, written by the AmsterdamRave team, covers the clubs, the festivals, how to get in and what to wear.

The best techno clubs for an Amsterdam rave

  • Shelter (Noord) — underground techno club in the basement of A'DAM Tower, right across the IJ from Central Station.
  • RADION (Nieuw-West) — a former office block turned creative hub, with a 24-hour licence and long techno nights.
  • Warehouse Elementenstraat (West) — raw, multi-room warehouse; the place where Amsterdam's first illegal gabber raves happened.
  • Levenslang (Oost) — dark techno all-nighters in the old boiler room of the former Bijlmerbajes prison.
  • Lofi (West) — former warehouse with house and techno, plus a courtyard for Sunday sessions.
  • Garage Noord (Noord) — alternative venue in an old car repair shop, known for experimental line-ups.
  • Thuishaven (West) — industrial site with open-air stages in summer and heated tents in winter.
  • Het Sieraad (West) — techno and house in a former jewellery school from 1904.
  • Phono Lake (Nieuw-West) — open-air dancefloor at the Sloterplas lake on summer weekends.

Note: the legendary De School closed in January 2024, so older guides that still list it are out of date.

Rave festivals in and around Amsterdam

  • DGTL — April (Easter weekend), NDSM Docklands.
  • Lentekabinet — May, Het Twiske.
  • Awakenings — summer festival at Spaarnwoude near Amsterdam, plus big indoor editions during ADE.
  • Dekmantel — August, Amsterdamse Bos.
  • ZeeZout — August, Tuinen van West.
  • Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) — every October, hundreds of club nights and conferences across the whole city. The biggest Amsterdam rave week of the year.

How to get into an Amsterdam rave

  • Buy tickets in advance. Most nights sell out online (Resident Advisor and the clubs' own sites). Door sales are rare for big names.
  • Expect a door policy. Come in a small group, know who's playing and keep it respectful.
  • Many clubs have a no-photo policy. Stickers on phone cameras are common — go with it.
  • Bring ID. You'll need it at the door.
  • Plan your ride home. Night buses run through the city; clubs in Noord are reached by the free ferry from Central Station.

What to wear to an Amsterdam rave

The Amsterdam techno dress code is simple: dark, comfortable and made to move in. Think an oversized black techno tee, a crop top or an oversized jersey tee worn as a dress, loose trousers, broken-in shoes and a heavyweight hoodie for the walk home. Finish with a hand fan or sunglasses. For the full breakdown, read What to Wear to a Techno Rave.
